Internship Report: Derya-san

My internship goal was to get a better insight into Japan and Japanese culture, improve my language skills and meet many interesting and new people.

My main work at Hotaru To Ishibashi No Yakata was to prepare the place in front of the museum, help preparing the items of the shop and generally help at the shop.
There I arranged the sold things like vegetables, parked rice, served at the register and talked to customers. I also sold ice cream and helped cleaning. During some events I helped with the preparations, shot pictures and uploaded them at the groundwork’s homepage and wrote reports about the events. Since it was known that I like drawing I also get some drawing/ illustrational jobs like creating posters. Something I also helped in the garden of the centre (Kusaushiri). Further, it belonged to my responsibilities to help keeping the place clean.

I did less bureau work and more general work that I thought, but it helped improving my language skills. Through the work at the shop I got to know many interesting people, especially from this place and learned about many new things (like how to prepare ice cream and how to pack rice, make tea). Since the people of the shop were very nice, I also could taste many new things. During the events of ‘Hotaru to ishi bashi’ I also got to know many people and experienced very interesting things (like blueberry farming, baking bread in a self-made stone oven in front of an old school, that isn’t used any more and now a public centre). I enjoyed my time although it was hard work,, but I think I got a very good insight into Japanese culture and fulfilled most of my goals from the beginning. The place around Hotaru To Ishbashi No Yakata is beautiful (excluding the moquitos!) and I will keep it in my mind fevers.
