Boring gift?

This week I experienced that learning the Japanese language doesn't mean only to study words and grammar. There are special expressions which you can't translate word by word....
When I left my Hostfamily they gave me a small gift and said" tsumaranai mono desu ga." I was totally confused and wondered why these delicious sweets are boring and ask her "Why boring, is it Omochi ? She doesn't know that I don't like the "boring" taste of it. "Yes, it is Omochi, a specialty of Kyuushu..., they answered." Than Miho, the daughter explains that "tsumaranai mono" means not really boring things, but a small present.... In this moment my face got deep red and I felt like a fool^^
