Nice to meet you. My name is Saki, I am a student at Kagoshima University and currently doing an internship at Asahi Nihongo.

My major at university is Chemistry.

Last year, I went to Canada for working holiday because I am very interested in international relations. I hope I can use the experience I got in Japan and Canada to support Asahi Nihongo and its students.

Now I am studying at Fukuoka University. I want to work in Japan after my graduation. I am doing an internship to gain some experience about work life in Japan.

I have been learning English since I was in primary school. I like to communicate with many people.

I didn’t use English for a long time since I came to Japan and I’m afraid that I can speak only a little or even forgot most of it.

However, I want to take part in the events at Asahi Nihongo, like the International Party. Thank you to everyone who helped me and I also want to help others. I want to promote my ability through the internship and gain experience.

Internship at Groundwork Fukuoka - by Daniel Bannert

My internship at Groundwork Fukuoka took place from August 19 until September 6.
Unfortunately I was ill during the first week, so the real start date was August 26th. Groundwork Fukuoka operates as an NPO, a non-profit organization.

On my first day I met all staff members of Groundwork Fukuoka, and most of the staff members of "Enya Kobo", another company located in the same building. I received a warm welcome and had a great start.

My first task was to write a self-introduction in English and Japanese, which was great because I could learn some new vocabulary and Kanji. This introduction was published on the website of Groundwork Fukuoka. My new colleagues helped me whenever I had questions.

I learned how to write proper Japanese and how to take phone calls in Japanese, too.

Since Thursday the 29th, I am helping out at "Herb Garden", a school for children who suffer from a visual impairment. Groundwork Fukuoka takes care of the maintenance of that school, eg.g. cleaning the building and environment. I was really looking forward to this and I am glad I can help and work with the children during my internship.

The atmosphere at Groundwork Fukuoka is really nice, their aims and activities made my interest in social and environmental topics grow. I am very happy I chose this organisation for my internship.

I am always looking forward to the next day and I know my the remaining time will be great, too.

After finishing my 4 weeks of Japanese classes at Asahi Nihongo, I took the chance to do an internship in my professional field via Asahi Nihongo. I’ve been working at a hotel in customer services in Montreal, Canada for 10 Years. They referred me to many places; one of them was Hakata Ono, one of the many restaurants of the Ono Group in Fukuoka. I was told it was a friendly place and one of the nicest restaurants in town. I had my interview on June 22 and on the next day, I started. What a nice experience! Ever wanted to work into a Japanese restaurant in Japan? (This one actually serves Chinese food, though). Well, I had the chance to work there and as well improve my Japanese every day. It was a new, nice challenge for me.

I learned how to greet my co-workers (when I started working: おはようございますand when I left work: おつかれさまでした), and customers as well (when they entered: いらっしゃいませ or left the restaurant: ありがとうございました). Something typically Japanese. Also, I learned how to give おしぼり(wet tissue to clean your hands before eating) to the customers by saying ようこそ and how to make Onigiri. I also prepared a few cocktails and beers at the bar, served drinks to the tables, cleaned glasses and dried utensils. The usual restaurant job, but this time in Japan! 

The staffs were friendly and professional, and the managers too. For me; these 4 weeks of internship overall were a fun experience and moreover a chance to practice Japanese in a nice environment in Japan, rather than working in an office building in front of a computer. I love working with people at my hotel in Canada, so for me, it was very nice to socialize with the clients and staff here in Fukuoka. I think everyone was happy to practice English a bit, and I could practice Japanese. A Nice cultural exchange! I recommend to anyone who wants do to an internship to apply at Asahi Nihongo, they will find you a place where you can practice your Japanese, communicate with Japanese people and improve your overall skills.

I can say that it was an unforgettable experience for me.

My name is Corinna, i`m 21 years old and from Germany.
Today i`m starting my Internship in Asahi Nihongo Language School.
I came here at the end of july and took a language class for 1 Month. It was a lot of fun and i learned a lot. Now i`m starting to work here.
My internship is going to last another month; so i will finish at the end of september.
That means i am staying here in Fukuoka for 2 Months.
I learn, see and do a lot of fun stuff. The food is really amazing and there are lots of Animes and Mangas i can watch and read to practice my Japanese.
I like to read and watch Movies so it`s perfect practice.
Ohterwise i like to play soccer, listen to Music or meet with friends.
In Germany i`m studying IT. In the future I would like to work in the manga/anime field or become a teacher. That`s my reason for coming to Japan and learning japanese.
My Japanese is very poor, because i only started in April. 5 months to learn a new language is not enough. It doesn`t stop me from having a fun and amazing time in Fukuoka.
i`m enjoying mystay and meeting lots of different and amazing people. I`m an open minded person so it`s really great to learn and meet people from different countries.
Additionally i`m interested in other Religions and cultures, so Japan satisfies my hobbies to the fullest.

Now we are on Summer vacation, and I spend enjoyable days.
I am studying for qualifications, go shopping with my friends, and work at a part-time job.
The other day, I went for sea bathing at Iki in Nagasaki.  The sea was very beautiful.I had a very good time there.

I have played sports since I was child so I like sports very much, and I enjoy watching sports too.

I belong to junior-leaders club.  We can increase our leadership skills by working with and playing with children.  It is difficult for me to teach children, but it is very worthwhile.

I may provide some trouble here, but I do my best.

Internship

My name is Maiju and I come from Finland. I started working at Asahi Nihongo as an intern for six months.

I first came to Japan three years ago as an exchange student. My major is International Business and studying languages is one of my hobbies. I can speak Finnish and English, but I have studied Swedish, Chinese, German, French, Spanish and Russian too.

There are many things I like in Japan, but I really love Japanese food (or almost any food for that matter). If I had to say what I am not very fond of, it would be the bees. So far, here in Fukuoka I have only seen one "killer bee" which we do not have in Finland. I just hope there are not too many of them!

Please tell us a little about yourself and how you got involved with Asahi Nihongo.
My name is Simon, and I am from Vancouver on the West Coast of Canada. I finished my university studies in Canada and then came to Fukuoka because I wanted to try working in a Japanese company. Asahi introduced me to do marketing at a cosmetic company, and then I spent 9 months in this beautiful city.

What kind of internship or job do you have here in Fukuoka?
I am currently working at Ritter School as an English teaching staff. I used to teach in Saitama for one whole year, but I am enjoying it here much more.

What are you working on at the moment?
I am currently studying a little Japanese on the side and organizing summer parties at Noko Island.

What are the most rewarding and challenging aspects of working in Japan?
The most challenging part is definitely the language. Although foreigners learn set phrases for how to communicate at work, there will always be times when you have to learn new words and expressions on the spot. But after overcoming this challenge, it feels very rewarding because you know you can accomplish difficult tasks.

Did you take classes at Asahi Nihongo before starting the job/internship? Are you　still taking classes?
Yes, I took classes with some of the best Japanese teachers I have ever had. The quality of teaching is excellent, and teachers really care about your progress.

Do you have any advice for someone interested in studying and finding a job/internship in Japan?
‘’The sky is the limit!’’ If you find passion in what you want to do (working or studying in Japan), and you keep yourself motivated, there is no stopping you!

 My name is Manami Yamashita, I am starting an internship from today. I study Education sciences at the department of Education in Kyushu University and I am a sophomore. I am from Nagasaki but I live in Hakozaki now. I have been working as a part time cashier at  shopping center for about 9 months.
I am interested in this company because of their English conversation lessons and international exchange programs. I have been studying English at school so far, however I'm not good at listening or speaking. We don't have much opportunity to meet foreign people, but i will do my best to communicate in English.I want to make this internship effective for me during these 3 weeks, so I will learn my job fast. University's classes and my part-time-job occupy my life at this moment, nonetheless I want to study English and computer skills so i can use them in my future job hunting next term.

Internship Report Juliane Henning-san

During my Internship at Quantize from November 2011 until February 2012 I learned a lot and had a

lot of fun. It also gave me some ideas about what I want to do in the future.Quantize is an haute couture fashion label that is quite famous in Fukuoka. The designer Nobuko.Nakamura creates wedding dresses and ready-to-wear-lines that are very special, because of th typical Quantize print. There is a history behind every piece, because the print was created by a Japanese artist from Kagoshima, which also is the hometown of Quantize designer Nobuko and manager Kiharu.
I learned a lot about fashion and the way a fashion label works. There is a lot work behind all the shows and presentations and because I was working in the PR section I got a look behind the curtains, which was really interesting. My tasks were organizing, blogging and helping out with several things. I spent a lot of time working on the Quantize Fukuoka blogs and also created a Quantize Germany blog to promote the label in
Germany for the coming fashion exhibition in Berlin. Working at Quantize was so much fun, I really had an amazing time and I really enjoyed my work! Nobuko and Kiharu are really nice people and working with them is great! The whole internship was a very good experience for me, because I felt fully accepted in the company and was allowed to work very freely.
I’m really looking forward to seeing Quantize in Berlin and keeping in touch!

Hello. I am indebted to the internship from program. My name is Kazuko Matsunaga. I am a second grader of Kyushu Women's University.
My eyes are my charming feature. My eyes become thin when laughing, but round usually.
At the university, I am majoring in psychology. I belong to two clubs. One is about history, and the other about animals. About history club: I went for summer vacation in Osaka and Kyoto at the historical club. Then, it saw and toured castles and temples. I am going to go to Hagi of the Yamaguchi prefecture in March. About the animal club: I went for summer vacation to the Marine World, and looked at and toured around the marine animals. I am going to go to Safari park and Umitamago of Oita prefecture in April.
My hobbies are making sweets and netsurfing. About making sweets, I made chocolate brownies St Valentine's Day this year. My favorite sweets are also chocolate brownies. But making brownies is my favorite. I enjoy netsurfing. I like seeing makeup and clothes-related sites in netsurfing very much. I sometimes refer to the contents seen on the Internet or a magazine, and go shopping. My favorite color is light blue. The contents of my pencil box are full of light-blue stationery. Regrettably, light-blue clothes do not suit me.
I would like to do my best working as hard as possible, I have difficult feeling confidence with foreign languages.

Where are you from?
I’m from the north east of China, a place called Dalian. It’s a rainy place, but with nice people and nature.

Why did you came to Japan?
I came to Japan as an exchange student, I am currently graduating as a bachelor of economics.

Why are you doing an internship?
Because I wanted to experience what work is like in a Japanese organization. Asahi Nihongo is interesting because of the multiple cultures in the language school including Japanese. The website and explanation that they gave was also very good. It is very easy for a foreigner without a lot of experience to get an internship through Asahi Nihongo. They guide you through all the various pitfalls and they are nice people!

What do you think of Asahi Nihongo?
I think Asahi Nihongo is a friendly place where it is easy to work. They work very hard but in an easy way with good explanation. I think I am learning a lot here.

What are you working on?
I am currently working on a CMS (Joomla) updating and translatingwebsites. I am also working on the structure of these websites andhow we can make the information on the pages better in general.

What do you recommend in Fukuoka?
Get tonkotsu ramen at Ipudon ramen! It is really good. I also like the Fukuoka tower, awesome view and a nice atmosphere.Hobbies:I like to take a swim to exercise. I also like a good book (currently reading the Asahi elementary school newspaper for Japanese practice) and I like a good onsen! Maybe that’s my biggest hobby, taking a nice relaxing onsen. Beppu is only a day trip away so that is good, you should go sometime!

Internship Report Michael-san

I had my internship at Hiroshima Co.,LTD from 8/22/2011 to 10/28/2011. Originally a liquor shop selling wines, spirits and beer, they have been around since 1957. By 1986, noticing a demand for quality, imported beers, the company changed its focus to importing specialty beer from overseas and distributing those products to other sakayas, warehouses and liquor shops in Japan. Today the company has over 227 varieties of beer including 7 seasonally limited brews. They have customers everywhere in Japan from Hokkaido to Okinawa.

Every week I worked from Monday to Thursday from 11am to 5pm with an occasional early start or overtime. My tasks were to process orders and categorize different types of customers in order to accurately calculate the correct price while observing tax regulations on alcohol. Managing shipments to customers between different warehouse locations, I also created documents for shipping purposes. At times I would team up with other co-workers to manage the small warehouse located near the office to physically assemble special orders for shipment.

Aside from making sure paperwork was properly processed, some of my most important tasks involved contacting breweries in the UK, Belgium and Austria. Negotiating both orders for large pallets of beer as well as the shipping conditions and prices from overseas were no easy task as the processes entailed communicating in both English and Japanese.
With an internship in Japan, I hoped to improve my Japanese language skills while learning to function in a professional environment. Most of everything I ever learned about business was through textbooks or in a classroom environment. Being able to experience a professional environment first hand would help me get practical hands on experience and an idea of what path I would like to follow for my future career.

Through my internship at Hiroshima CO., LTD, I was able to experience real life at a small Japanese trading company. Because it was my first time in a professional environment and it was all in Japanese, it was a very challenging, but rewarding experience. I have not yet experienced the equivalent to this environment in my own country, but I do know that I enjoyed my time here. In addition to gaining some practical experience, I was able to improve my Japanese and gain some friends along the way.

This internship was a rewarding experience. I had a lot of fun in the office and everyone was very kind to me. If I had something I didn’t understand, they didn’t mind re-explaining everything in different words even if they had to do it multiple times. Everyone was very patient with me at times I felt slow, but they didn’t mind giving me important tasks and making me feel like I was really part of the company. The experience at this company went beyond my expectations.
