On the first very cold day this fall, I got a chance to speak with Michael Lewerissa of the Netherlands on his last day at the Kyushu Animation Studio. The studio has created a very lovable and popular character series and just recently finished a successful movie.
In the low lights of the quiet animation studio, we spoke about Michael's unique, intensive and creatively challenging experience.
Asahi: What is the company's main focus?
Michael: It makes animation, stop motion animation, or “douga ka genga” animation in Japanese.
Asahi: What tasks do you do?
Michael: I trace the original to get the feeling, then they check it, and because I made many mistakes I have to make the mistakes better.
Asahi: Is there a special technique?
Michael: After I trace the original, it’s put on the computer and the lines have to be perfect. If it is not, when you start coloring the color will go everywhere. And they use special coloring for the shading, it’s very interesting.
Asahi: What do you plan to do with this experience?
Michael: I want to add some of this technique to my own art to get an anime affect. Though, even with the computer, this technique is a lot of work.
Asahi: Any suggestions to people who wish to intern in Japan?
Michael: Well, this is what I wanted, so it’s great! So, if you like it, then you should go for what you want and never give up.
Michael’s boss was very impressed with how well and fast he picked up the technique, but he mentioned production speed is very important for professionals.
