Do you know Doraemon?

My favorite Japanese comic character is Doraemon. Doraemon looks like a cat and his ears were nibbled off by a robot mouse, so he doesn't like mouses. He is sended from the future to aid the fool Nobita, whose daily life is always a challenge^^ Doraemon has a special pocket called "Yojigen-Poketto" or four dimensional pocket with lots of space for technical toys. I like the "door toy" that opens up to any place the user wishes. Doraemon is very famous in Japan like Micky Mouse in the western world^^

would visit us with his friend, either. He was on a trip in Japan for holiday and came in Fukuoka in

Male character gets female in Japan

Yesterday I talked with my friends from Germany via Skype. I was so proud to tell them about life in Japan and sended a link of the last Asahi Nihongo Blogs I wrote. Suddenly they laughed about the last four Blogs. "Mike, what happened with you, you really got female" they said. "You're writing about ladie's topics like soap, washing and cute cats". I think they're right. Since my arrival here I just talked with female Japanese teachers during lesson time. They pronounces all words very softly. So maybe I adapted my soft Japanese to my character. Oh no!!!!

2010 FIFA World Cup Soccer South Africa!

TV crew came to Asahi Nihongo yesterday for interviewing World Cup Soccer to the students.
The interviewees are Joe-san from Netherlands and Toke-san and Marie-san from Denmark. You can easily guess, can't you? Because Japanese team are going to play a match against Netherlands and Denmark at the 1st stage.
They asked them what will be the score against Japan, why you think so, how far your team goes and etc. It took about 10 minutes for each team. Joe-san told us that he was nervous at the interview and it would be strange to see himself on TV on Sat.

Let's see how they are on TV! We cannot wait!

ON AIR: May 29 (Sat.) from 17:00~ at TNC (local broadcast in Kyushu area)

Going to a Dentist in Japan....

Have you ever been to a dentist in Japan?
Some of our students are kind of afraid going to a dentist in Japan.
The same was me until last week.
A friend refereed me to the Akasaka Dental Office Clinic.

The dentist and staff at this clinic were much more friendly
and gentle, as dentists I have met back in Germany.
The staff was very professional.
I ask for permission to take some pictures.
Please enjoy the pictures and if you have a hurting tooth, just go to the Akasaka Dental Office.

Interview

Today's interviewee is Toke-san from Odense in Denmark.
Odense is famous for Andersen of children's books author.

-Why do you study Japanese?
●I like watching animation, such as 'Naruto' 'One Piece' and etc. through internet. I want to be able to listen in Japanese without subtitle.

-Do you communicate with your home stay family?
●Yes, we talk about daily stuff and sometimes I watch Japanese TV with them.

-What do you like to do during staying in Fukuoka?
●I go out with my girl friend or friends. Last weekend I went to the cosplay event called 'Comic City Fukuoka' at Fukuoka Dome with my friends. Many people play dressed-up like Manga or animation
character. It was fun.

-Will you let us know your recommended place or shops?
●I like 'Ramen Stadium' at Canal City and a ramen restaurant in Ohashi, where you can eat 'Yaki ramen' (ramen without soup).

-What do you dislike during staying in Fukuoka?
●Well....What do you call fermented beans...'Natto'! I don't like Natto!

Thank you Toke-san for the interview. Most of all students dislike 'Natto'. When you like 'Natto', you
can grasp quintessence of Japanese food...maybe...!

Washing in Japan is a challlenge^^

Sometimes I feel like a prehistoric man in the world. In a different culture everyday's things become suddenly the most difficult problem-like washing clothes! Yesterday I bought a new Japanese washing machine, actually the best and most expensive one. First it seemed as normal, I put all my clothes into the machine. But than I couldn't found the small box for the powder and softener. I guessed this must be a mistake...and went back to the shop. I was really angry. But the shop owner just laughed and explained that usually there aren't any boxes in Japanese washing machines. You have to put it directly in the clothes...I really didn't know that. Embarrissing^^

Students from University of Tasmania

We had over 20 students from University of Tasmania in Australia last Nov. as part of the curriculum at the university. We received inquiries for this year and hold correspondence with them. We had good news that some of students want to come again this year because they said that they had a very good time here. In addition the students who participated this program before gave a good responses so the university side say the numbers of students beyond the expectation will apply for the program.
Thank you for the nice message to us and we look forward to seeing you this year as well.

Kirei Kirei^^

Yesterday I went to a Conbini to buy simple handsoap...I decided to choose "Kirei Kirei" to become "beautiful beautiful" ...When I opened the soap I recognized a seperate applicator. That applicator makes using it very unique because soap becomes a form of a little star. I think it reflects exactly the Japanese lifestyle. The goal or spirit of Japanese life is the aesthetic way you are doing things, you have to do it beautiful or "Kirei Kirei" for example by a special soap applicator^^.

Ohio goes Eye muss^^

My first Japanese lesson was very fun. In my class there joint also Matthew from Ohio, USA. It was also his first time in Japan. When our teacher entered the classroom she greeted us friendly by "Ohayoo gozaimasu". Suddenly Matthew got shocked. "What kind of chaos happened in Ohio?" I explained him that she was just greeting...but for Matthew it sounded like a bad message from hometown. Everybody laughed. I think Matthew would never forget the new vocabulary^^

"Are there any places that we can use Japanese besides at school?"

The theme of this summer is: “Let’s jump out of the Classroom and have an International Interaction!”

The Sunlight is becoming stronger and it is getting warmer everyday, it feels like summer. How have you been doing these days?

Asahi Nihongo has been planning several events for the summer that all of you can enjoy. Sometimes we have a question from our students at Asahi Nihongo, who learn Japanese
"Are there any places that we can use Japanese besides at school?"
I think the sea of Fukuoka is beautiful and it will soon be summer, also I think it’s going to be fun to have events including marine sports and to be able to enjoy them simply because it is summer.

I want to make opportunities where the students jump out of a classroom, use words which they learnt at their lessons, and the phrases that are simple and are used on the daily basis in Japanese while doing marine sports.

For this summer season, we have created many activities, where you can enjoy marine sports every Wednesdays and Sundays. The fees for these activities will include transportation and the equipment such as windsurf boards, surfboards or paddling boards to use at the beach.

If you are not the marine sport’s type of person, we also have the International BBQ Party on Monday, July 19th. There will also be a Summer Camp from August 14th to the 16th in Yame-city. At this camp you can go for a swim in the river, learn the traditional Japanese rice cooking with bamboo, and experience how to make tea, or participate in the village’s festival and more. There are many attractive activities included on this event. For the children we offer kids` windsurfing classes in Fukuma beach in the morning on Saturdays.

Of course, we also offer activities for the international exchange such as Jogging & Walking, DVD watching, Karate Class, Fukuoka-Japanese Club (Japanese free lessons) on a fixed day every week as usual and our renown International Parties once a month, so please take advantage and mingle a lot using Japanese.

I would like to arrange many opportunities for our students to use and practice their new language abilities by learning outside the classroom in this summer.
Let's all have a great season and enjoy an international exchange in nature together!

Thank you for visiting us!

Marno-san and his girlfriend came to see us. Marno-san finished his Japanese course last month.
After that he traveled in Japan with his girlfriend for about 2 weeks. We know he studied well and enjoyed Fukuoka life well. So as his trip in Japan. Before they go back to Germany, they stopped by to say hello to us. It was a good surprise to see them.

Thank you Marno-san for visiting us and the nice sweets presents. We look forward to seeing you again at Asahi Nihongo!

Thank you for the nice post card.

We received a post card from James-san today. The post card is from the city called Martin in Slovakia. He was a student at Asahi before. He's been travelling over the world and sends us a card time to time. It's nice to hear from you, James-san. All Asahi Nihongo staff say 'Hello and Have a nice trip!' to you.

Do you know Maneki Neko?

When I walk through the streets of Fukuoka I always recognize that sweet beckoning little cats in front of shops or restaurants. These cats are called "Maneki Neko" and they are a common Japanese sculpture. Maneki Neko promises luck and lots of customers by holding up the left palm. Holding up the right palm symbolizes prosperity and money. I really need a cat beckoning by left and right palm^^

Interview

We interviewed Joe-san from Den Haag in Netherlands. He has laid-back atmosphere and he answered all questions in Japanese.

-What do you usually do after school? Is there any place that you recommend?
●I sometimes watch Japanese drama by DVD. I like Ohori Park where you can raw a boat with oars, which is fun. I also like Fukuoka City Museum where you can see 'Kinin' (Golden Bull).

-How do you feel your Japanese has improved since you came to 'Asahi Nihongo' ?
●I feel my Japanese becomes more natural and listening has improved a lot. When I speak Japanese I feel more relaxed than before.

-We know you've applied for an internship. Why are you interested in the internship program?
●I think it's not enough to learn the language only at school. You can study and speak at the certain level there but if you live there and have native friends, you can feel true life through the language. Moreover I know the words, phrases and attitude are different between daily life conversation and working situation. Not only living in Japan but working I think I can experience real Japan through the language.

-What would you like to be in future?
●I'd like to get an international diplomatic job.

He speaks Dutch, German, English, Chinese and Japanese. I'm impressed it's because he can speak many languages but he studies deeply including the each culture and background. It was nice talking with you, Joe-san! Thank you and sorry for my English translation mistakes if you find.
